The Covid-19 crisis and consequential shutdown has left many people throughout the country in the unfamiilar territory of financial crisis. Iron County Care and Share Executive Director Peggy Green recognized the need to increase the organization's assistance to community members (possibly before community members recognized that need themselves).
Once the coronavirus shutdown was announced, "We knew the needs would increase. That's a gimme," Green said. Even when times get tough, sometimes people are hesitant to use the food pantry or don't know where the pantry is located or even that it exists.

Peggy Green,
Iron County
Care & Share
Executive Director
"We knew that if we took the pantry to the people, they would come," she said. Iron County Care and Share is one of those steadfast organizations that seeks to serve those who most need a hand up. In order to reach people outside their normal clientele, Care and Share (in cooperation with the Utah Food Bank) began a mobile food service that provides groceries to residents, no questions asked.
The Mobile Food Pantry supported in part by the Utah Food Bank. The mobile pantry is usually scheduled to park at the Cedar City Municipal Library, near Veteran's Park, on the first Friday of the month. Green said local needs have increased so much, it has been necessary to increase delivery dates and the amount of available food at each event where volunteers hand out free food to those who need it. You don't have to declare your income. You don't have to explain your need, you just go there and get a nicely-packaged box of food. Staff and volunteers are well-trained on the requirements for protecting themselves and those they serve from Covid-19. Please, if you need food and are ill, ask someone who is well to pick it up for you.
Shortly after the shutdown was announced, Green saw more clients willing to come forward. Not all clients were from Cedar City residences, many were from surrounding areas as well. The first week of the pandemic scare, volunteers had prepared 100 boxes to distribute. All of the boxes had been given out and there were still 65 cars waiting in line. "We had them all follow us to the pantry so we could give them some help," Green said. "We can honestly say they are not our regular clients, these are people new to crisis and it sucks." At the most recent event volunteers handed out about 150 boxes of food.
Thanks to the Utah Food Bank, the local Care and Share is able to provide people with cereal, butter, cottage cheese, fresh produce, flour, pancake mix and more. Dairy and fresh fruits and vegetables can be very hard to come by on a very tight budget. With children home from school, Green said a can or two of cream of mushroom soup just doesn't cut it.
"We have been so blessed with our relationship with Utah Food Bank because throughout this whole thing they have not missed a beat," Green said.
For Green, the opportunity to serve clients from all walks of life is a powerful experience, "It touches hearts like you would not even imagine. When you hand someone that box of food you can look in their eyes and literally watch the weight lifted of their shoulders."
Iron County Care and Share is headquartered at 222 W 900 N, Cedar City, UT 84721. The facility also houses the community homeless shelter. You can call Care and Share at 435-586-4962.
The free Community Food Pantry is available to all community members on the First Friday of each month between 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the library parking lot, 303 N 100 E, Cedar City, UT 84721. To help people through this particularly troubled times, the Community Mobile Food Pantry has added some extra dates in May.
Don't struggle. Don't worry about what you will feed your children during this time of uncertainty. Visit one of these events and pick up some groceries to help you through an unprecedented shutdown of our community.
The next Community Mobile Food Pantry dates are:

Our Cedar City home lifestyle is dramatically changed by the threat of Covid-19 (coronavirus). While many local eateries are still offering their delicacies to a hungry public, some have deemed the risk too great to their employees to continue operations.
Cindy Peterson Moxley told us she is supporting the local economy by ordering out at places like Pizza Cart. She called in, paid over the phone and her food was delivered right to her car. She also tried Chef Alfredos where she called in, paid and picked her food up right in side. At Erawan she was able to call, pay by phone and they delivered her order to her car too! It's easy. At Subway, she went through the drive-thru and was able to slide her own card right into the hand-held card reader, "I didn't touch anything but my card, very smart." She is looking forward ot ordering from Lighthouse this weekend.
"Spreading the love to my favorites. All great experiences so far," she said.
We asked area foodies on Facebook’s Cedar City Food Review about their experiences with take-out.

“We’d like to thank everyone for their patience as we’ve been implementing the new procedures. The phones have been tied up quite a bit and we have been working to make things run smoother and keep the phone lines more open.
“Today, we’ve added in takeout windows to our front doors. You can still phone your orders in ahead of time, but it won’t be necessary to pay until you pick your order up at the window. We will call you when your order is ready to be picked up at the window. You may also order gelato or other products at the to-go window. We will be accepting cards or cash and sanitizing our system between orders.
“We can still take payment over the phone and deliver to your car if necessary. Please reserve this service for the elderly or others who cannot easily come to the window.
“Thanks again and please let us know if there are any questions.”

~The Pizza Cart via Facebook

Thousands of spectators (and sheep) flocked to the Cedar City Livestock & Heritage Festival Saturday for a fun-filled day of good old-fashioned Western activities. The Sheep Parade is a favorite without a doubt in this Southern Utah Community that treasures its hometown feeling.
You know, the rich history here is so engrained in the hearts and minds of Iron County residents that I'm pretty sure this community will maintain its small town atmosphere no matter how much the population grows.
Sheep wagons, antique tractors, trucks, horses and - sheep of course - paraded down Historic Main Street to the delight of an audience made up of people of all ages. The tradition began in about 2007 when Zions Bank invested in a major show of support for farmers and ranchers throughout the county by footing most of the bill for a week of poetry, Dutch oven cooking, music and entertainment. The event, coordinated by the Utah State University Extension Service and countless local businesses including farmers and ranchers has grown consistently since then. It takes place every year in late October - the time when cattle and sheep ranchers traditionally bring their livestock down off Cedar Mountain summer range to winter range in the desert valley.
A Dutch oven cook-off is a crowd pleaser (and for $5 a person you can sample every dish). Vendors gather throughout the Cross Hollows Arenas including the Iron Rangers Arena and the indoor Diamond Z Arena with country wares from quilts to lamps to wooden furniture. If you want to get a lamb burger, you'd better get there early because the line to that food vendor is usually a mile long! If that doesn't appeal to you, try a funnel cake, giant corn dog or one of the many other treats available there for sale.
Sheep dog demonstrations are a real thrill. Yes, those dogs really do work and the training to hone their herding skills is absolutely phenomenal.
A petting zoo features rabbits, goats, sheep, kittens, ponies, draft horses and more.
It is traditional for cattle and sheep herders to live out their days in what is commonly referred to as a "sheep camp." These camps are trailers that hitch to a truck for easy-pulling as livestock is moved from one grazing spot to another - and herding cattle and sheep is much different than taking a modern day hike! Many have been dragged through multiple generations and are on display at the festival.
Rodeo events carry on throughout the day at this, one of the Festival City's most popular festivals. Tractor pulls for adults and peddle tractor pulls for the kids pit good friends and whole families against each other in friendly competition.
Now, I know it all seems like fun and games. The truth is, there's a whole lot of education going on here too. Sure, the children learn all about livestock. They are treated to wool shearing demonstrations, craft demonstrations and lessons about our communities special members who perpetuate memories of the past like Utah State University Extention Agent Chad Reid, who has kept this event alive and growing for years. Even the Frontier Homestead State Park Museum gets involved with demonstrations and tours.
The most important lesson in my estimation? It's a clear picture of the past, present and future coming together in perfect harmony. It's a deep understanding of our precious Western culture and the desire to preserve a lifestyle that helped, helps and will help this community bond together in any weather.
If you missed it this year, plan to be settled in your new Cedar City home next year in time to enjoy days of play, learning, history and - sheep.2019-10-28T13:49:00-07:002020-05-15T09:51:35-07:00Sam Doddtag:cedarcityonline.com,2012-09-20:4039Cedar City Home to Southern Utah University

Southern Utah University made its home in Cedar City long before I was a twinkle in anyone's eye. Sometimes I forget just how much impact this major Utah institute of higher education brings to the community. The list seems endless, but I'll attempt to give you a taste of what it brings to a flourishing city tied indelibly to its pioneer roots:
Access to higher education
Research resources
Bolstered economy
Exciting athletics
Educated workforce
Fine arts
Young population
Educated residents
Crucial growth
I could go on and on; but, what struck me today as I strolled across campus was the overwhelming sense of pride Southern Utah University has instilled in Cedar City residents since it became a part of the landscape in 1897 as Branch Normal School. Citizens fought through the raging winter to ensure their town became the host of a very important Utah institution. Although the original founders have long since passed, that pride has only become more contagious as the university expands its academic, cultural, scientific and athletic offerings year after year.
A Look Inside Our Pride
Southern Utah University offers a whopping 145 undergraduate programs and 18 graduate and certificate programs in six academic colleges.
With enrollment of more than 10,300 (10,245 in 2017), this institution has a huge impact on our community.
The Princeton Review's "Best Colleges: Region by Region," and "Best Value Colleges" boards have recognized SUU multiple times!
"One of 40 public schools to be included on U.S. News & World Report's annual collegiate ranking, SUU is ranked in the top tier of all universities in the West, for its strength at both the undergraduate and graduate levels of education," according to SUU's Accolades web page.
Year after year the university has earned the distinction of being ranked in the top 100 of the more than 8,000 accredited four-year colleges and universities across the nation.
It was even named the most "Outdoorsy University" by Outdoor Nation two years in a row (2015-16 and 2017-18) and remains the reigning champion!
This is in no way a complete list of honors and awards bestowed upon the university, for a more comprehensive list visit the University's website!

If you're ready to sell your home - really ready - you and your real estate agent will sit down and take some time to explore presentation and marketing options.Your reason will discuss ways to prepare your home to sell and explain the selling process. When it comes time to discuss holding an open house (or multiple open houses), take these factors into consideration.
The Good News
1. An open house is a good way to get people to come in and actually experience your home first hand. People who might not otherwise want to bother a buyer's agent to walk them through it will often come to an open house.
2. Word of mouth is a great form of advertising. Even if people who are just curious come to your open house (and not necessarily looking for a new home) are sure to discuss it with friends and neighbors. Encourage them to share their positive thoughts on social media and the exposure stretches even further.
3. Your Cedar City open house will be a good way to show your home to multiple people at once. That could ultimately save time and the hassle of showing it over and over again.
4. Your open house marketing campaign is one more great way to show off your home in flyers, brochures and on the internet. Marketing is a crucial element when selling a Cedar City home.
5. If you use creative (but professional) local methods of advertising including signs and balloons, your neighbors are sure to take notice. It's a way to officially announce your house is on the market.
The Bad News
1. First and foremost you need to consider a potential security risk. Remove any valuables from your home before you open it up to strangers who might not have your best interests at heart. When you invite strangers to meander through your home, you might be inviting trouble.
2. In Cedar City families are extremely busy. They tend to run to school and church events, sports, extracurricular activities and work-related activities. Large families are especially busy. It can be difficult to find a date and time that is convenient for people to take time out of their busy schedules to attend an open house.
3. Open houses tend to attract more lookers than buyers. That's okay, for all the reasons discussed above, but people who are curious about the inside of your home will often attend just to satisfy that curiousity.
4. You will be asked to leave your home during the open house. People are enticed by the opportunity to peak in all the rooms and explore all the wonders of your home freely. If you are uncomfortable with that, discuss it with your Realtor (i.e. me) to come to a mutually beneficial resolution.
5. Preparing your home for an open house can be a pain! Realtors get it. You're inviting strangers to tour your home (while you're not there) and you might feel a little sensitive about that. Click here for more information about preparing your home for sale! The better prepared you are to open your home to strangers, the less anxiety you will feel about opening your Cedar City house.

People ask me why - of all the places in the world - I live and have a home in Cedar City, Utah. I prefer to think of it as "Festival City, Utah," and (at least for me) the upcoming Livestock & Heritage Festival pretty much sums up my deep love for this community. Stalwart people here truly take heroic measures to ensure our rich history is taught and treasured; but, they always keep their eyes toward the future and for this Iron County community, the future is bright.
The Heritage & Livestock Festival is just one of the many Cedar City activities that take place throughout each year - the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Neil Simon Festival, Rennaisance Faire and July Jamboree - are just a few that come immediately to mind. They're all special, lively, entertaining and fun. They all serve a purpose and they are all part of a rich culture I want my children to embrace. But this one, this one honors the very lifeblood that pumps through our collective throbbing heart.

Ewe have got to see this.
The 2019 Cedar City Livestock & Heritage Festival will take place on Oct. 24-Oct. 27. This time is set apart to show respect for the farmers and ranchers who have worked so hard for generations to build what is now one of the state's most vibrant - yet, decidedly rural - communities. With the help of the Utah State University Extension office and countless volunteers, the festival was established to "Celebrate Cedar City's Rich Agricultural History."
The signature event (and a childrens' favorite) is the Sheep Parade scheduled to take place on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. According to the festival's official website it is "... one of the most unique parades in country. Approximately 1,000 sheep will be herded down Cedar City’s Main Street. There will be historic sheep wagons, antique tractors, vintage cars, and so much more."
There's plenty more to experience during this three-day celebration including:
Cedar Chest Quilters' Quilt Show
Cowboy poets and music
Western vendors
Antique Tractor and Machinery show
Arena Stock Dog Contest
Junior Ranch Rodeo
Draft Horse Teamster Contest
Vintage Car Display
Kids' Pedal Tractor Pull
Dutch oven cooking tasting
Dennis Stowell Memorial Ranch Rodeo
Sheep lead contest
Cowboy Church
Livestock ranchers played an integral role in the settling of the West and no where is it more evident than in this town where they made it possible for early settlers (members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder-day Saints arrived here in 1851). The town's first settlers enjoyed milk, butter, meat, wool and hides to clothe and keep them warm. Cattle, sheep, horses and fowl were raised to sustain people in an unforgiving high desert.
Although numbers of farmers and ranchers and their livestock have dwindled, those commodities are still primary sources of cultural wealth in and around Cedar City.

You found the perfect new home home in Cedar City for your family! That's great. It's in the right neighborhood for you, it has all the room you need and the yard is exactly what you're looking for. Now it's time to seek a mortgage loan, right? Wrong. The time to shop for a home loan is before you shop for a home.
While seeking a loan before you even find a home might seem like putting the proverbial cart before the horse, it is crucial that you take steps to ensure you are qualified for a loan before you get your heart set on a property that might be unattainable under your current circumstances. For you "glass half full" kind of home shoppers, it is possible you are selling yourself short if you haven't talked with a mortgage lender before you decide on a home.
I've seen it time and time again; a buyer finds a home they absolutely love and establishes a firm resolve to buy it! Then, they start looking for a loan. Here are the problems with that kind of mentality:
1. Until you have met with a lender, you might not know whether or not you qualify to buy a home.
2. Even if you are highly qualified to obtain a loan, a pre-approved buyer could slip in and buy your dream home even as you fill out the paperwork.
3. Sellers are less inclined to take an offer seriously when it comes from a buyer who has not been pre-approved. In fact, some sellers will not even consider an offer (or show their home) without a letter of pre-approval.
4. Homebuyers do find nasty surprises on their credit reports from time to time. Even if those surprises were recorded in error, it takes time to resolve credit issues. You could be forced to begin the home-shopping process all over again.
I love being a Realtor. I literally look forward to waking up every day to the new opportunities the industry offers me. One of the benefits I love most is the ability to make my clients' dreams come true. It's all about handing over the key and seeing the incredible pride and satisfaction on a successful buyer's face. The art of bringing buyers and sellers together is actually thrilling. My profession helps me fulfill the needs of people who are buying Cedar City homes and selling Cedar City homes and when a deal comes together, it's a beautiful thing.
I confess, there are some downers that come with working in the housing industry. One of the worst is seeing a seemingly well-qualified buyer lose the opportunity of a lifetime because he or she is not prepared.
I'll say it again, a mortgage pre-approval is an absolutely crucial first step in the homebuying process. Let's get your ducks in a row! This blog does not delve into the requirements of obtaining a home loan. I am assuming here that your debt is under control, that you regularly check your credit report and immediately act when something is amiss. I'm assuming that you are well-established in your job or profession and have a good handle on your finances. I'm also assuming you understand you will have to bear some upfront costs and have saved for that contingency. I'm not assuming you are qualified for a loan and that is why our Cedar City home buyers seek pre-approval first!
I have great news for you; even if you are not qualified for the mortgage loan you need or want, lenders will take heroic steps to help you understand exactly what you need to do to get qualified.
What is a Loan Pre-Approval?
Ready to take this on this mortgage challenge and finance your first home, or second, third? This will be one of the most important purchases of your life. Don't take it lightly. At the end of our interaction, I want to see you smiling (not tearing your hair out in frustration). A letter of pre-approval does not guarantee you will get the mortgage loan you want. It does improve your chances significantly. Mortgage lenders will check your credit, verify your imployment and income, and determine how much you can reasonably spend on housing. This is important because the lender will tell you how much money you can borrow to buy a home. You are obviously not required to use the maximum amount offered, in fact you will be the one to determine the maximum with which you are comfortable spending. Once the process is complete, the lender of your choice will give you a letter of mortgage pre-approval that outlines your spending qualifications.
1. Research local lenders
I work with lenders every day and have a pretty good handle on those who can meet the needs of different buyers. Call me, I'm always happy to make a referral. Just as you will shop for the best home for your money, you need to shop for the best rate and loan re-payment agreement for you.
2. Identify three lenders you trust.
Once you have identified three lenders you trust, make an appointment to visit with each one (in person if possible). Carefully vet the lenders. Real estate scams are on the rise so if you apply over the phone, check the lender's reputation with the Better Business Bureau and the Utah Division of Professional Licensing.
3. Ask a million questions.
Ask each lender a million questions (or as many questions as you have) and write down the answers. What kind of mortgage rates do they offer? What mortgage terms do they offer? Are they familiar with buyer's programs that can help you save on down payments and/or repairs? In what type of real estate do they specialize? How stringent are their requirements?
4. Be honest with your answers.
We're all adults here. You will expect straight forward, honest answers and you need to be prepared to give them. Don't fudge your numbers or leave any debts out (even if they don't show up on your credit report), and for heaven's sake don't imply you have access to a down payment and closing costs if you don't. The goal here is to not only help you buy a home, but also to make sure you can make the full payments on time while meeting your other financial obligations.
5. Be prepared to provide information and make adjustments.
Your potential mortgage lender will ask you to provide important personal documents including W-2s, income tax documentation. You will be asked to fill out a loan application. I recommend creating a folder with copies of all your important financial records so you can readily provide the information required.
No doesn't mean never. If you fill out an application truthfully, verify your employment, allow the lender to pull your credit reports and end up with a big fat "not today," don't become discouraged. Most lenders offer programs to help you resolve credit issues, dispute erroneous information on your credit report and better prepare for that glorious day when the answer is a big fat "yes, you're approved!"
The American dream of buying real estate in New Harmony, UT is worth is worth fighting for. Once you understand the steps you need to take to qualify, half the battle will be won. That letter of pre-approval is the first step of the actual buying process and I can't wait to see you beaming when you come to me ready to shop for your new Cedar City house.
Still have questions? Let's talk. I will happily share my experience in order to help you secure your home.2019-09-14T17:43:00-07:002020-05-15T11:30:50-07:00Sam Doddtag:cedarcityonline.com,2012-09-20:3775Free Stuff to do in Iron CountyFun Free Stuff to do in Iron County

Cedar City is a progressive community alive with festivals, live theaters, museums, lots of free things to do and a deep love for the arts. It is home to the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespearean Festival, the Neil Simon Festival, the Beverly Museum of Art and Southern Utah University. While the culturally-rich environment advances every year, part of what makes it so charming is the city’s interest in preserving its past. Cedar’s historic district is evidence of our roots and our residents’ determination to pay homage to its early settlers.
Think about taking a walk to wonder at the historic buildings and Cedar City homes here! The mature trees, stunning yards and houses will remind you of a community spirit of strength not lost on these homeowners. Witness multiple architectural styles that represent a span of time from the 1880s to the mid-1960s. According to the city’s official website, www.cedarcity.org, there are 172 homes in the designated area. Of these, 104 are considered to be historic. Each tells a story of its time. All you have to do is listen.
Meander through Time
You will find a map of the designated area on the city’s easy to maneuver website, just click here! It’s no surprise this area is adjacent to Southern Utah University, a gem institution that helped to put Cedar City on the map. A Wikipedia article titled, “Cedar City Historic District” describes the area as being, “roughly bounded by 100 West and 300 West, College Ave., and 400 South.
When you take a walk, be sure to watch for the vultures that nest in the area’s trees! They are a real treat to see. Find it ironic a committee of vultures would choose a historic location for their summer home? When I learned of the committee and witnessed them for myself on the 200 West block, I decided to research the symbolism of the vulture. To many, this massive bird of prey represents resourcefulness, strength, balance, determination and patience. Now, why wouldn’t they want to live in the heart of this community?
Cedar City’s Humble Beginnings
Strength is the hallmark of pioneers who came to the high desert region to mine Iron from its red hills. The town, originally settled by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was first built on what generational locals call the “Little Muddy” in 1851. It is more commonly known now as Coal Creek. Once settlers got their bearings, they laid out a formal town site known as Cedar Fort on the south side of Coal Creek. The fort community was established in about 1852. I’m not a formal historian by any stretch of the imagination, so I’ll rely on the detailed information provided by Cedar City’s administration. We’ll learn together here.

The town was about 1.5 square miles. It must have been a hot spot, because by 1953 there were 1,000 settlers! In 1855, the settlers got tired of being flooded out and moved to what we now consider Cedar City. The mining community bustled and hustled until about 1858 when mining slowed significantly. Two years later, the population dwindled to a handful of stalwart pioneers (about 301) who brought new life to the community through farming and ranging. Sheep became the hot commodity. Once Union Pacific wound its way through Cedar in the early 1900s, a base of tourism began to develop and the town began to thrive again.
Generations Represented in Cedar City’s Historic District
The most striking elements of our town’s historic district (to me) is the variation of architectural styles in such a small area. Generation upon generation is represented here from homes erected in the late 1800s to those build in the late 1950s and early 1960s, classic examples of distinct architectural styles blend together to make up this beloved community of neighbors who tend to know and understand the sacred natures of their Cedar City homes.2019-09-02T09:08:00-07:002020-05-15T12:10:25-07:00Sam Doddtag:cedarcityonline.com,2012-09-20:3847Visit Frontier Homestead State Park

There are many reasons to live in Iron County Utah. And one reason is the Frontier Homestead State Park.
One of the best ways to prepare our youth for the future is to teach them about the past. Frontier Homestead State Park in Cedar City is more than a history lesson, it's a hands-on learning adventure complete with a 250,000-pound steam shovel adjacent to the front door! There are no "do not touch" signs on this monster; in fact, families are encouraged to climb it and take a look inside! It's like the Union Pacific caboose - it's all part of a "definitely do touch" thrilling environment.
Inside the main building you will find a museum of historic relics that tell the stories of pioneers that settled here to mine Iron from the mineral-rich hills. Examine pioneer gems that tell a tale of the struggles and victories of souls determined to make their homes in Iron County. Trust me, a move to Cedar City is much easier today!
Learn the important rolses Native Americans played as the area's earliest residents. You might even get to see the giant teepee on display during the summer.
Witness ancient wagons, horse-drawn carriages and even a horse-drawn hearse. These well-preserved pieces of history are displayed in an inviting and thought-provoking environment for would-be historians of every age.
Park currators rotate art exhibits and show off local works we're all proud of. What I love most is when they bring history to life! Children learn to weave rugs, wash clothes in a wash tub with a scrub board, pan for gold, load a wagon and so much more!
Outside, well-preserved buildings depict the pioneer and native lifestyles. Imagine seeing an actual beehive-shaped charcoal oven and a real blast furnace water wheel. Hear the story of the Hunter Home relocated its original Cedar City location.
